The city is famous for the two important pacts which were signed after the World War I. The first one, in 1920, between Italy and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenia, reshaped the borders between the two nations. The second Treaty, which took place in 1922 between German and Russian Foreign Ministers, ratified the surrender of all territorial and financial claims after World War I and normalized the diplomatic relationship between the two governments.
Inaugurated in 1934, a unique cableway connects Rapallo to Montallegro and its Sanctuary, at an altitude of 600 meters, with a 7 minutes long trip.
