HISTORY

Named Lavania by the Romans, during the Carolingian age the town was County seat and then feudal stronghold under the dominion of Fieschi Family.
This important local House, also known for its two popes, Innocent IV and Adrian V, during Medieval age succeeded in antagonize the jurisdictional and political power of the Republic of Genoa.
In 1547 the failure of Giovanni Luigi Fieschi conjure against Andrea Doria led to the decadence of the house and its feuds, with the consequent submission of Lavagna to Chiavari, all along faithful to the Republic of Genoa.

Notable People

Adrian V, who was pope for a short period in 1276, and Innocent IV, whose pontificate lasted from 1243 until 1254, were born in Lavagna.
From the beach of Lavagna, the French poet Paul Valéry described a “leudo”, a typical ship used for the trade of black slate in the Mediterranean Sea, while Lord George Byron, English poet of 19th century, was the first to plant the sea lily along the beautiful beach of Cavi.
The Italian painter Gaetano Previati, attached to the Divisionism style, lived in Lavagna his last years.
