Elena Bono, one of the most important Italian writers of the second postwar, who won numerous national and international prizes, lived in Chiavari since her adolescence until her death, at the beginning of 2014.
Federico Delpino, who was born in Chiavari in 1833, was an important Italian botanist, considered one of the founders of modern floral biology.
Chiavari is also tied to Saint Antonio Maria Gianelli, founder of the Sisters Gianelline Order, that in the city performed some of his miracles.
In 1998 Pope John Paul II was in Chiavari during two days in September for an historical pastoral visit.
