Chiavari Chair
The activity of carpenters in Chiavari developed since 16th century when the city was one of the main centers for wood trade in Liguria.
The Chiavari Chair was created in 1807 by the cabinetmaker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi that reworked some chairs in the French Empire style, simplifying the decorative elements and lightening the structural elements.
The so called Chiavarina became a symbol of the city and had immediately a great success, praised by many important people such as the sculptor Antonio Canova or Napoleon III.
Nowadays the Chiavarina is still produced, following tradition, in some Chiavari workshops and it is still known and appreciated all over the world.
