The Hinterland Valleys radiate from the Coast into the Ligurian Apennine

Just inland from the coast,
a natural barrier
is formed by the Apennine mountains,
which protect the seaside resorts
from the elements and create a background
of extraordinary beauty.

Among ruins dating from the Middle Ages
and remnants
from the ancient Republic of Genoa
and its noble families,
the landscape bears witness to the passage of time
and hard physical labour.

The endless stone walls erected in order
to create farmland, mills, mines and foundries
in an effort to make a living off the land
bear evidence of man’s toil.

Proceeding inland, where the Ligurian Apennines
reach their highest peaks,
typical Alpine landscapes are created
by the pine trees and firs
whose reflections can be seen
in the crystal-clear waters of small mountain lakes.

Relaxing summer holidays
can be spent in the little villages,
where there are plenty of opportunities
for invigorating hikes and excursions.

The Fontanabuona Valley runs parallel to the coast.
Its climate is temperate due to its proximity to the sea and the protection provided by the mountains.
The typical produce of this valley is hazelnuts, but chestnuts and olive trees grow there also.
The most important activity in the Fontanabuona Valley is the extraction of slate, which is called “sleeping bread”.
It is very important for the local economy and is of great interest from the point of view of tourism.
The Ecomuseum of Black Slate is in effect a living museum spread out over six different sites which take visitors through the various stages of mining and working the slate.

The Aveto Valley is the most mountainous of the Ligurian Apennine Valleys.
The waters of the Aveto stream run through the valley, which is surrounded by the highest peaks of the Ligurian Apennine range, topped by Mount Maggiorasca at 1799 metres.
This lovely setting offers salubrious air, beautiful landscapes and wonderful natural attractions including Alpine meadows, beech and fir woods, green fields, rock formations and wetlands.
The Valley’s main town is Santo Stefano d’Aveto, a location known for tourism which is popular during the summer months due the pleasant, cool climate, the excursions it offers and for cross country skiing in the winter.

The Sturla Valley, crossed by a stream with the same name, offers a great variety of landscapes due to its varying range of altitudes (from 30 metres above sea level to 1702 metres at the peak of Monte Aiona).
Borzone, with its splendid Abbey, is an interesting attraction for visitors.
Dating back to the first half of the 7th century, it became an Abbey in 1184.
The area around the Giacopiane Lake is also an attraction.
This artificial reservoir is surrounded by meadows and the Lake of Malanotte, which also offers stock fishing.
The “Indian Forest” in Belpiano has a fun adventure trail, with Tibetan bridges hanging at different heights between the pine trees.

The landscape of the Graveglia Valley offers a variety of environments.
In the northern part, there are thick woods, while in the southern part the inhabited area has terraced slopes covered with olive trees and grapevines.
Mount Zatta, which overlooks the Valley, marks the boundary with the neighbouring provinces, with the splendid landscapes of Mount Biscia.
The most interesting aspect of this Valley is its geology. Going up the Valley, it is possible to view the geological structure of the ocean floor.
Gambatesta is the home of an historic mine, where a mineral museum can be visited on a little train.
During the course of the tour it is possible to learn about the methods for drilling and extracting manganese.

The Petronio Valley is located just behind Sestri Levante.
The Petronio River runs through the valley, which overlooks the coast belonging to the towns of Sestri Levante and Moneglia.
This Valley and the valleys to the side are very interesting from a naturalistic and environmental point of view.
The territory is both sweet and harsh at the same time, encompassing a wide range of landscapes and diverse types of vegetation which grow on the higher parts above and on the areas bordering on the sea.
