The Liguria Region has a good wine tradition, favored by its position on the sea, that has always facilitated maritime traffics and marketing of products. The production of wine of the Region dates back to Roman period. During the Middle Ages it increased becoming an important activity for the area. The Gulf of Tigullio, bounded west by the Mount of Portofino and East by Punta Manara, design one of the most extraordinary sceneries of the Mediterranean sea. This area of excellence for international tourism, rich in history, art and culture is characterized by a very interesting wine production. The Denomination of Controlled Origin “Golfo del Tigullio” established with Ministerial Decree on 1st September 1997, regulates wide range white , rosé, red, sparkling and “passito” wines.

The white wines are made by the main vines “Vermentino” and “Bianchetta Genovese”, in different percentage between 20% and 70%. For the remaining part other non aromatic vines are used up to the percentage of 40%. The red or rosé wines are made by the main vines “Ciliegiolo” and “ Dolcetto”, in different percentage between 20% and 70%. For the remaining part other non aromatic vines are used up to the percentage of 40%. The area of production of the “ Golfo del Tigullio” DOC Wines includes the area along the coast, east of Genoa until La Spezia Province, and the first inland. The area of production is limited, about 55 hectares, mainly located around Sestri Levante and along the Petronio and Graveglia valleys.
